Known as “America in Miniature”, Maryland agriculture is as diverse as that of the nation. Yet, Maryland is considered relatively unimportant agricultural state by national standards with some 15,400 farms. The leading products are broiler chickens, dairy goods, corn, and soybeans. Agriculture is the state’s largest commercial industry where 40% of the land is in agriculture – over 2 million acres. The state is also a prominent producer and processor of seafood and a national leader in the production of blue crabs and soft clams.
