Farming in Massachusetts is relatively unimportant economically. The state has some 6,900 farms, which have an average size of 99 acres, and farmland covers about 14% of Massachusetts. Although the state is not a major farming area, it is a leading producer of cranberries in the U.S. and ranks among the leading commercial fishing states. Greenhouse and nursery products, such as flowers and ornamental shrubs are the leading source of farm income. Specialty crops are the hallmark of Massachusetts’ agriculture such as squash, pumpkins, beans and tobacco.
